Governor Murray
By 1748 all sides in
the war of Austrian Succession were becoming war weary
and could not see a more advantageous outcome to the
conflict. The two main powers direction the war by that
point were France and England and they both were in
favour of a peace settlement. The representatives of the
various combative countries came together in Aachen, in
the Holy Roman |Empire and signed the treaty on October
18, 1748.
Austrian gave up Silesia to Prussia and some minor
territories to Spain. France, after a brilliant campaign
in the Netherlands, gave up its conquests there.
Austrian also ceded the Duchy of Parma and Guastalla to
Spain. The main
impact upon North America was that the French regained
control of Louisbourg in Cape Breton in exchange for
Madras in India. The New England colonies had organized
an expedition which resulted in the capture of
Louisbourg in order to remove it as a constant threat to
the British colonies so the return of it to France in
exchange for the Madras, came as a major shock to most
in Massachusetts. The colonies felt betrayed and
realized that the peace was just a temporary interlude
until the wars would start again and Louisbourg would
have to be captured once more. |
