The Copper or Tatsanottine may have been given their name because of the rich deposits of copper found in the area which they inhabited. They are members of the Athabascan linguistic group and have been associated with the Chipewayan people also.

The were known for the copper goods they produced and traded with other groups. With the arrival of Europeans and European products the demand for their produced copper products disappeared and they migrated towards some of the trading posts established by the Hudson Bay Company.

They were located along the shores of Great Slave Lake and around 1670 numbered just under 500 people.
