The Sioux lived mainly along the headwaters of the Mississippi River in the Dakotas, Idaho and Montana. The were one of the largest and most powerful nations on the plains and were constantly at war with their neighbours. They got their name Sioux when the French first made contact with them in 1640 and the Algonquin guides travelling with the French called them Nadowessioux. The four main groupings of the Sioux were the Winnebagoes, the Assiniboines (who were slowly forming their own identity), the Minnetaree and the Southern Sioux.

The Sioux depended upon the buffalo for their livelihood and like many other nations on the plains, their lives were greatly affected by the arrival of the horse in the 1600's. The Sioux migrated slightly throughout their territories depending upon the time of year and where the buffalo herds travelled to.
