Newfoundland had developed slowly remaining mainly a
fish based economy with a few larger settlements and
many smaller fishing outposts. By 1830 the population of
Newfoundland reached about 60,000 which were mainly
located in a few larger cities such as St Johns but
with other towns starting to grow in size to support the
expanding fish and sealing industries. The Island
population was mainly composed of Catholics and
Anglicans with a smattering of Methodists who mainly
settled in the smaller outposts. Education for the
general population was somewhat basic and a separate,
merchant class in St John's had begin to develop
rapidly.
Newfoundland lagged
behind many of the other colonies in development and
growth mainly due to restricted economic opportunities
in the colony. When it achieved responsible government
in 1855 it was mainly due to the fact that the rest of
the colonies had already accepted that system and
Newfoundland was playing catch up. |
