1870 saw the addition of the new province of Manitoba to Canada after the Riel uprising had forced the hand of the Canadian Government. The Hudson Bay Company also formally handed over control of the Northwest Territories to Canada. British Columbia joined with Vancouver Island to form a large west coast British Colony.
