The building of forts in North America
served a due purpose in that they were intended to
provide protection for the settlers against any hostile
natives and strategic military positions against rival
European powers. Quite often the location where forts
were built, became the starting point for a town and
then a city but in some cases the location was so
isolated in an area of such harsh conditions that to
this day there are no local inhabitants.
Canada boasts a wide
variety of forts representing an impressive spectrum of
types and designs. Louisbourg is the largest fort in
North America and presents the entire town that was
built up around it to the visitor. They all tell another
side of the story that is Canada. |
