of Green Gables
One of the most heartfelt and endearing
stories in Canadian literature is Lucy Maud
Montgomery's story of Anne Shirley. The book tells the
story of an older brother and sister who live in a rural
area of Prince Edward Island and decided that they need
a young person to help out on the farm and they decided
to adopt a boy. A girl shows up from the adoption agency
and the story expands from there.
The portrait that
Montgomery paints of Canadian life, experiences, culture
and values captures the period so accurately that the
book became an international best seller and PEI the
destination of many travellers who want to visit the
home of Anne. A
recreation of the location of the story is presented in
Cavendish PEI which served as the real site of many of
the scenes that Montgomery weaves into her books. Japan
had included Anne of Green Gables in their educational
curriculum since 1952 and not only do large numbers of
Japanese tourists visit the site but many choose t have
their weddings at the farmhouse.
