In a world darkened by ethnic conflicts that tear nations apart, Canada stands as a model of how people of different cultures can live and work together in peace, prosperity, and mutual respect.
U.S. President Bill Clinton

Canada has lived with conflict from pre-history to present day. Although most conflicts have been associated somewhat with European politics and conflicts, since the second world war Canada has primarily taken on the role of the peace keeper. The conflict and military actions in Kosovo are a departure from this policy but an affirmation of Canada's commitments to several political and treaty organizations such as NATO. Canada is now engaged on a new battlefield in Afghanistan which is testing the political, military, and moral strength of Canadian soldiers and people. The outcome is yet to be determined.
