The second World War is viewed by many as the last good war. A clear cut battle against the evil of the Nazi Reich and the militaristic empire of Japan. A victory by the great democracies over the fascist forces of totalitarian dictators. This was a war that touched every part of the world and reshaped the world through devastating campaigns, victories, and the total collapse and destruction of large areas of the world.

The war saw the resolution of many ambitions and nightmares. It resulted in the end of an empire that was victorious, the emergence of a democratic and totalitarian superpowers, the birth of the cold war, and the emergence of Canada as an important contributor to victory and as a new player in its own right, on the world stage.
