| The west coast Indians had an unique and
highly developed culture and lifestyle. With the abundant Salmon and the
rich coastal rainforests supplying them with food and materials for shelter,
transportation and art, they were able to blossom in a renaissance of
activity and pursuits.
Although there were many different nations separated by
mountainous divides and dangerous waters, they did share many beliefs,
practices and customs such as the carving and presentations of totem poles.
Another custom was that of the potlatch which would occur when a prominent
member of a band would gather as much of their possessions as possible and
give it away during a festival attended by their friends and relatives. The
arrival of the Europeans was devastating to their society for many reasons
and they are only fully recovering their cultural self awareness in recent
years. |
