Kutenai
The Kutchin or Kutenai belong to the
Athabascan family and lived in the British
Columbia, Yukon and Alaska area along the Yukon,
the Peel and lower Mckenzie river valleys. Their
social structure allowed the chiefs and leading
members of the band who had property to take
more then one wife. he medicine men could with
time acquire more authority then the chiefs.
Their numbers fell drastically after contact
with Europeans due to inter nation warfare and
the practice of killing the female children.
They practiced and enjoyed many sports including
wrestling which could involve all of the males
of a tribe. They were very hospitable treating
their guests to feasting and entertainment for
as long as the guests remained which could
sometimes be months. |
